As we celebrate women all through this month of March, this is one of the questions that we hope to answer.

There鈥檚 nothing like the feeling of walking into a room, hair swaying, hips moving, and instantly commanding attention 鈥 not just for how you look, but for the confidence and energy you exude 鈥 no apologies, no second guesses.

To tap into that energy, I asked fifteen Nigerian women to share the Afrobeats songs by female Nigerian musicians that make them feel like hot babes.

All the songs recommended are featured in our #BumpThis playlist at the end.

鈥淎nytime these songs come on, I feel smarter, like I鈥檓 Maradona鈥 鈥 Chidinma

Songs: “” by Lady Donli; 鈥溾 and 鈥溾 by Niniola

“” by Lady Donli makes me feel like the baddest babe. I get goosebumps from the song’s intro: “Ego nwere oma lusi o’luke, ego nwere鈥” which translates to “The money I have.” So, imagine dressed up, walking and listening to this song while I have my money in my account and cash in my purse 鈥 nobody can stop me. I feel proud and elated whenever I hear that song.

Also, “” and “” by Niniola make me feel like a woman who can get any man she wants. Those moments make me feel smarter like I鈥檓 Maradona.

鈥淭here’s a girly energy in it that I deeply connect to鈥 鈥 Blossom

Song: 鈥溾 by Tems

It’s Tems鈥 “” for me. Whenever it gets to the “Came for the wickedest whine / Me and my girls on the wickedest time” part of the song, I jump up. There’s a girly energy in it that I deeply connect to. I think it’s feminine energy that Tems knows too well, and she embodies it fantastically in this song.

鈥淭his song allowed me to be free of the fear of “What if something bad happens?鈥濃 鈥 Zia

Songs: 鈥溾 by Lady Donli; and 鈥溾 by Ayra Starr

鈥溾 by Lady Donli. It’s pretty self-explanatory, but wallahi, I’m addicted to cash. Money is power, and it makes me feel like a hot babe. Nobody encompasses it like Lady [Donli] in this song. Ayra Starr’s 鈥溾 allowed me to be free of the fear of “What if something bad happens?” And truly, what is the definition of a hot babe if not someone that doesn’t give a fuck about consequences?

鈥淚t’s just a bad bitch song鈥 鈥 Chioma

Song: 鈥溾 by SGaWD

Oh, it’s SGaWD鈥檚 鈥.鈥 It’s just a bad bitch song. I followed her on X and was hooked on a teaser of the song she posted. So, I patiently waited until release day. That was the only song I listened to for a week.

Now and again, when I want to remind myself that I’m a big bad bitch or I just want to talk my shit, I listen to it. I know every single word. It’s two minutes of her talking her shit, and I just love it.

鈥淚t makes me feel untouchable鈥 鈥 Dami

Song: 鈥溾 by Ayra Starr

鈥溾 by Ayra Starr does it for me. It鈥檚 bold, confident, and has that 鈥渘othing can kill my vibe鈥 energy.

I connect with it because it鈥檚 about protecting your peace and not letting negativity get to you. The first time I heard it, it instantly hooked me 鈥 the beat, the lyrics, and Ayra鈥檚 delivery just scream main-character energy.

What I love most about it is the attitude. It makes me feel untouchable like I鈥檓 walking slowly with the wind in my hair. It鈥檚 that perfect song to remind myself that I鈥檓 that girl and nobody can dim my shine.

鈥淚t鈥檚 basically about being a baddie and a boss babe who wants only money and jollof rice, not love鈥  鈥 Folu

Songs: 鈥溾 by MOLIY; and 鈥溾 by BLNDE

I’ll say 鈥” by MOLIY and 鈥溾 by BLNDE. I found them while trying to create a personal playlist for Nigerian Alt茅 female songs. 鈥淪hake It To The Max鈥 has a great vibe, and the lyrics are pretty interesting, too. It鈥檚 basically about being a baddie and a boss babe who wants only money and jollof rice. That’s where I am right now. I鈥檓 not looking for love, I just want food and money.

鈥淚t gives that 鈥榮tep into your power鈥 feeling鈥 鈥 Maryanne

Song: 鈥溾 by Ayra Starr

Ayra Starr鈥檚 鈥溾 makes me feel like a confident and unstoppable babe. The message speaks to me, especially the lyrics: 鈥淢e no get time for the hate and the bad energy.鈥 It reminds me to focus on myself and my success.

I first heard it when she released it, and it was everywhere鈥攐n the radio, even in the Ubers I was in. However, it hit me when I played it while I dressed for a night out with my friends. It gives you that 鈥渟tep into your power鈥 feeling.

What I love most about it? The beat, the energy, and how Ayra sings it confidently. It鈥檚 more than a song鈥攊t lifts my mood.

鈥淚t evokes an emotion that makes me feel very sexy鈥 鈥 Illy

Song: 鈥溾

Seyi Shey’s 鈥溾 is hot, and the music video elevates the song. It evokes an emotion that makes me feel very sexy and comfortable in my own skin.

鈥淚t鈥檚 the perfect song to do my makeup to when I鈥檓 heading out鈥 鈥 Steph

Song: 鈥溾 by SGaWD

It’s SGaWD鈥檚 鈥.鈥 I heard it for the first time on Lotanna Don鈥檚 Instagram story. She鈥檚 friends with SGaWD, so she was trying to get her followers on to her music. It鈥檚 a song about female dominance, sexual liberation, and putting nonchalant men in their place. It’s also about knowing when to get lit, when to hustle as a woman, and being the hottest babe in the room.

I like that it鈥檚 very daring. The first line says, 鈥淕irls like me, you know we like sex.鈥 You just know SGaWD doesn鈥檛 care about the stereotypes they place on sexually liberated women. She goes on to give her commandments on being THAT girl. Singing 鈥淏oytoy鈥 out loud gives a feeling that everything else is beneath you and you鈥檙e the most daring version of yourself in that moment. It鈥檚 the perfect song to do my makeup to when heading out.

鈥淭hese songs have latent energy that transforms you into your smoothest self鈥 鈥 Anita

Songs: 鈥溾 by Darkoo and 鈥溾 by BLNDE

It’s 鈥溾 by Darkoo, and recently 鈥溾 by BLNDE. I discovered both songs on the internet on New Music Friday. The songs are silky and have latent energy that transforms you into your smoothest self 鈥 it doesn鈥檛 matter where you hear them.

鈥淚 generally thought Tiwa was hot, and I felt hot, too鈥 鈥 Chigor

Songs: 鈥溾 by Tiwa Savage; and 鈥溾 by Ayra Starr

I love Tiwa Savage鈥檚 鈥溾 and Ayra Starr鈥檚 鈥.鈥 This Tiwa鈥檚 song gives me that feeling mainly because of its video. I can鈥檛 even remember the first time I heard it. I didn鈥檛 even own a phone then. I just remember seeing it on TV anytime I passed the sitting room. I鈥檇 stop to stare instead of doing the chores I was probably going to do.

I was much younger then, but I remember watching the video repeatedly and doing the small choreography towards the end. I generally thought Tiwa was hot, and I felt hot, too.

Then Ayra. Ayra is naturally hot, but there鈥檚 just something about 鈥淲oman Commando.鈥 From the sass in the choreography to the sass in the lyrics and the babes [Coco Jones and Anitta] she put in the song. The lyrics, melody, and everything just get me. I first discovered it last year when she released her album. I listened and instantly loved it. It was in my top 3 at first listen and then my top 2 when .

鈥淭his song makes me feel like a baddie鈥 鈥 Tiana

Song: by Adanna Duru

There鈥檚 a Nigerian artist based in the US called Adanna Duru. is my anthem. It makes me feel like a baddie. I just want to dance and move my body. It鈥檚 also a really sexy song.

鈥淏oth songs make me feel like I own the room鈥 鈥 Lola

Songs: 鈥溾 by Ayra Starr and 鈥溾 by Tems

My choices are Ayra Starr鈥檚 鈥溾 and Tems鈥 鈥.鈥 The former has that playful, confident energy that makes me feel like the main character. It鈥檚 bold, fun, and effortlessly doesn鈥檛 give a hoot about your judgment. Meanwhile, 鈥淐razy Tings鈥 carries that smooth, self-assured vibe that makes me feel untouchable, like I鈥檓 gliding through life with an effortless glow.

I love the confidence both women bring. Whether it鈥檚 through the lyrics, the beat, or the attitude in the delivery, both songs make me feel like I own the room, like I鈥檓 unstoppable, and I must let no man or woman kill my energy because I鈥檓 the main character in my life and story.

鈥淭he music makes it feel like someone switched on a different atmosphere鈥 鈥 Ngozi

Song: 鈥溾 by Fave

My pick is Fave’s 鈥.鈥 I鈥檓 not big on Nigerian music, but I discovered this song three years ago. I love Fave’s voice! It adds so much depth to the music and makes it feel like someone switched on a different atmosphere. I also like the lyrics. I鈥檓 big on lyrics that tell a story that鈥檚 easy to follow, and this one does.

鈥淗er song resonates because it affirms women as sensual and sexual beings鈥 鈥 Adeyele

Song: 鈥溾 by Niniola

Niniola is that girl who makes me feel like a hot babe every time. Her songs have the right balance of sultry, sexy, and hip. I have no choice but to embrace the baddie I am. Her song, “” does it for me. It’s a self-praise that gives off this 鈥淚鈥檓 that girl don鈥檛 mess with her鈥 vibe I love. Listening to this song adds a little more pep to my step, and gives me that confidence not to let anyone look down on me.

I love how Niniola infuses Yoruba into her songs and hypes herself as a beautiful lady. As a woman, listening to that song resonates because it affirms women as sensual and sexual beings. It encourages confidence, too. The first time I heard Niniola as a teenager, I watched her “” music video on Soundcity, and the song stuck in my head for days. And I鈥檝e been a fan ever since. I like that her sound is upbeat and bold. She gives this IDGAF attitude in her songs, which I just love. As a hot girl who enjoys life, Niniola is up there for me.

From soulful love songs to high-energy street anthems, the month had something for every mood.

Here are the 10 best Nigerian songs of February 2025.

10. 鈥淲HY LOVE鈥 鈥 Asake

Amid rumours of his YBNL exit and a , Asake keeps his focus on the music, embracing love on 鈥淲HY LOVE.鈥 The track is both a tribute to his lover and a self-assured anthem, as he hails himself as an angel and suggests that any woman with him is lucky. While his self-confidence鈥攔ooted in a military mindset of self-sufficiency鈥攎ight come off as self-centred, he鈥檚 at his calmest and best when she鈥檚 around.

9. 鈥溍宖茅mi鈥 鈥 Lod霉

In this track, UK-based Nigerian-born is drunk in love. Unlike her previous releases and features, she sings entirely in Yor霉b谩, calling out to a distant lover to return to her鈥攑erhaps one still stuck in Tinubu鈥檚 Nigeria, yet to japa and reunite with her.

Her use of rich figurative language, combined with a blend of traditional and alternative production, places 鈥溍宖茅mi鈥 in the lineage of new-school artists building on the foundation laid by pioneers like .

8. 鈥淎ll The Love鈥 鈥 Ayra Starr

Ayra Starr makes a strong return with 鈥淎ll The Love,鈥 her first single since her record-breaking sophomore album, The Year I Turned 21 (2024). Centred on self-acceptance and personal growth, the song sees her reflecting on love in a way that feels both personal and universal鈥攁 letter to herself and the world.

Now a year older, her music evolves with her, blending lamba with sharp songwriting in a way that reaffirms her artistry.

7. 鈥淰IBRATION鈥 鈥 Mo’Gunz

moves between rap and melody, seamlessly blending both to set moods and create immersive soundscapes. On 鈥淰IBRATION,鈥 off his REPUBLIK RIDDIM two-pack, he seeks relief鈥攏ot through traditional therapy, but through Mary Jane to ease his stress and a woman鈥檚 presence to bring warmth.

Beneath the surface, the song reflects his search for self, purpose, and direction. Yet, even in moments of melancholy, he keeps the party going鈥攙ibrating through it all.

6. 鈥淯pdate鈥 – Burna Boy

For the first time in a long while, Burna Boy is taking a break from relentless touring and choosing to indulge in a well-earned vacation. 鈥淯pdate,鈥 much like 鈥淏undle By Bundle,鈥 is a bold declaration of his 鈥渃ity boy鈥 lifestyle鈥攕plurging on luxury sports cars and rewarding his loyalists with .

Though he sounds tired on this record, not even Soul II Soul鈥檚 鈥溾 sample could slow him down鈥攈e鈥檚 living his best life, and this is the update.

5. 鈥淥bimo鈥 鈥 Adekunle Gold

As someone whose long-term relationship has blossomed into marriage, Adekunle Gold understands the power of assurance and reassurance. On 鈥淥bimo鈥 (Igbo for 鈥渕y love鈥), he sets the tone with the opening line, “Loving you is primary,” encapsulating the song鈥檚 essence鈥攃omplete devotion. He sings about wanting what his lover wants, moving in perfect sync with them.

If you can鈥檛 imagine eating or doing anything without seeing the love of your life first, AG Baby has the perfect soundtrack for you.

4. 鈥淢ovie Star鈥 鈥 Ajebo Hustlers

This is a new offering from the Port-Harcourt (Knowledge and Piego). 鈥淢ovie Star,鈥 off their , is a heartfelt reflection on relationship struggles. Whether drawn from personal experiences or pure storytelling, the song carries an emotional weight that resonates deeply.

The chorus chorus promises unwavering presence through every mood and phase, while Knowledge expands on the theme with his signature rap style. Their seamless fusion of Afrobeats, Highlife, and Hip-Hop remains impressive, reinforcing their stance as hardworking, non-compromising artists. As they declared , this era is about demanding respect.

If you鈥檝e been following their journey, 鈥淢ovie Star鈥濃 and the entire Onorato project 鈥 stands as a testament to staying true to one鈥檚 sound.

3. 鈥淪HAOLIN鈥 鈥 Seyi Vibez

Fans have been wondering why Seyi Vibez has been so quiet. Some speculated that put a temporary hold on his releases.

Whether he was watching the tweets, itching to drop new music, or simply ready to break his silence, he鈥檚 back with , a four-track EP. The standout track? 鈥淪HAOLIN.鈥

Seyi leans into the dominant flexing about women, smoking Wizkid鈥檚 legendary loud, and moving with zero worries. He also subtly addresses concerns about his career post-label breakup鈥Everywhere good, everywhere che, che, che, che…鈥 Translation? He鈥檚 doing just fine.

If your DJ doesn鈥檛 mix this jam before or after 鈥淥ZEBA,鈥 you might be at the wrong rave. Street-pop supremacy.

2. 鈥淪omeone Like You鈥 鈥 Lojay

Unrequited love takes centre stage on Lojay鈥檚 鈥淪omeone Like You.鈥 He sifts through past memories and conversations, retracing where things went wrong. It鈥檚 not the heartbreak of something ending unexpectedly鈥攊t鈥檚 the pain of knowing the person he wants will never come back.

The song feels romantic, but at its core, it鈥檚 about love lost. Lojay鈥檚 soft, moody vocals and lyricism capture that deep sadness. Unlike his usual playful, smug takes on love, there鈥檚 no spinning the block here. This is the first single from his upcoming album, hinting at a shift from the 鈥済angsta romantic鈥 hard-guy lover to something more vulnerable.

1. 鈥淏aby (Is it a Crime)鈥 鈥 Rema

After HEIS, many expected Rema to continue riding the heavy EDM wave, but 鈥淏aby (Is It A Crime)鈥 takes a different route. If you paid attention to 鈥淣ow You Know,鈥 the closing track on HEIS, you鈥檇 have caught the hint鈥攈e鈥檚 leaning into a more chilled, mid-tempo solitude.

Sampling Sade Adu鈥檚 鈥淚s It A Crime鈥 (1985), Rema moves at a leisurely pace, throwing advances at a love interest who isn鈥檛 as eager. But he doesn鈥檛 beg鈥攈e states his case and, if she wastes his time, he moves on (鈥淚 no dey for too much whining鈥).

This song is an anthem for the average Nigerian toaster鈥攃onfident, expressive, but not desperate. Rema鈥檚 songwriting remains relatable, and as HEIS continues to set clubs on fire, 鈥淏aby鈥 slides effortlessly into softer, intimate spaces.

#BumpThis: 12 of the Best Afrobeats Songs of the 2020s That Sample Nigerian Classics /pop/best-afrobeats-songs-of-the-2020s-that-sample-nigerian-classics/ Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:37:57 +0000 /?p=340496 Sampling has always been part of how music is created. Musicians have regularly leaned on the songs that came before them to influence their music, and this has been the case in Afrobeats.

There’s something special about hearing a familiar riff or melody reworked into a brand-new banger. It’s like a big hug from the past, re-energised with new warmth. So, in celebration of this beautiful marriage of the old and the new, we’re counting down 12 of the best Afrobeats songs of the 2020s that sample Nigerian classics.

From Rema to Sade Adu,聽Johnny Drille to Original Stereoman, we’re diving into the tracks that keep the legacy of Nigerian music alive.

12. “” 鈥 Boy Spyce (2024)

Sample: “” 鈥 Davido (2019)

In 鈥,鈥 Boy Spyce embraces his romantic side, refusing to return to the streets as he pleads with his lover to stay. He glides effortlessly over the dancehall beat, delivering smooth melodies with ease.

At first, the sampling of isn鈥檛 immediately noticeable to the untrained ear. But on closer listening, the influence becomes clear鈥攖he song borrows heavily from the song鈥檚 signature percussion.

However, while Davido plays the confident Casanova, using his wealth to impress a love interest, Boy Spyce takes a different approach. He wears his heart on his sleeve, longing for a love as deep and intoxicating as rum and Schnapp.

11. “” 鈥 PayBac iBoro (2024)

Sample: “” 鈥 Peacock Guitar Band (1973)

PayBac iBoro breathes new life into the (1973), sampling the Peacock Guitar Band鈥檚 beats and vocals for his introspective rap track, “.” This moody production revisits the legend of , weaving it into a deeply personal narrative.

Eddie Quansa, a wealthy Ghana-based Nigerian, was once betrayed by his older brothers and vowed to seek revenge through success. If PayBac were Eddie Quansa, his verses would capture the moment just after betrayal鈥攚ounded but determined.

Though he sounds weary, his spirit remains unbroken. He refuses to bow to gatekeepers, pushing forward with the conviction of someone who has paid his dues and is ready for his breakthrough.

10. “” 鈥 Adekunle Gold (2024)

Sample: “” 鈥 Musiliu Ishola (2000)

The jiggy drums of are sampled on (meaning “pepper”).聽 AG praises his babe, and like every 鈥渇inished Nigerian man,鈥 he implores her to pepper him more. But this isn’t a call for pain鈥攐r soup. It鈥檚 a smooth, melodic plea for more seduction, making “pepper me” sound even hotter.

“Rodo” is a song for the hot ladies, their admirers, and the sizzling parties they light up.

09. “” 鈥 Tiwa Savage (2024)

Sample: “” 鈥 9ice (2009)

Relationship frustration gets to her neck and eventually leads Tiwa Savage to the studio in this Afrobeats-Amapiano jam. In this song, 鈥,鈥 she calls out to an unresponsive lover. Despite its theme of longing and emotional turmoil, “Pick Up” carries a jubilant feel鈥攑erhaps because it samples the chorus and beat of a celebratory track made for joyous occasions.

Tiwa admits her lover鈥檚 silence is taking a toll on her mental health. She feels like her head is about to explode, yet she still holds on. If Africa鈥檚 Number One Bad Girl can put the party aside to worry about a man, then relationship palava truly spares no one.

08. “” 鈥 Ayra Starr (2021)

Sample: “” 鈥 Lijadu Sisters (1979)

Three years before Ayra Starr explores romance in 鈥溾 (2024), she holds on tightly to love in “,” a standout track from her 2021 self-titled debut EP. With a beautiful and unapologetic approach, she sings about the butterflies in her stomach, her lover鈥檚 absence, and her longing to have him back by her side.

In the hook, Ayra seamlessly blends with the chorus of the (1979). While the original is a politically charged protest song and Ayra鈥檚 鈥淪are鈥 has no direct connection to its themes, both tracks share an undeniable grace, strength, and femininity鈥攓ualities also embodied by the mythological alpha woman, Orere Elejigbo.

Paying homage to legends on her debut project is a bold statement of Ayra鈥檚 creativity and intentionality. On “Sare,” she fuses R&B soulfulness with Afrobeats lamba, creating a delightful and memorable record.

07. “” 鈥 Shallipopi (ft. Pa Monday Edo) (2024)

Sample: “” 鈥 Pa Monday Edo (1996)

In 鈥淥bapluto,鈥 Shallipopi declares himself Oba鈥攏ot the ruler of Benin City or the music industry, but of Pluto, his record label. This declaration comes 28 years after (1996), which is dedicated to a long-gone Edo ruler, Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi.

Pluto is a dwarf planet and the name of a Greek mythological figure who controls the underworld. It also refers to a world filled with excess wealth鈥攁 world that Shallipopi calls himself ruler.

samples the vocals and beat of both as a nod to the older artist and as a signal to his Edo roots.

06. “” 鈥 Johnny Drille (2024)

Sample: “” 鈥 Original Stereoman (2005)

Johnny Drille鈥檚 creativity comes alive in聽 鈥溾 which samples beat (2005). What was once a cocky dancehall anthem celebrating artistry is transformed into a Country-Afrobeats fusion about bad belle鈥攖he haters.

鈥淓kwe鈥 refers to a gong, which inspired 鈥淪ample Ekwe.鈥 As : 鈥淲hen you beat the gong, people must hear the sound. That is how the sample came into it. If you have a product, you sample it for people to know it first and foremost before they can patronise you. When I sample my Ekwe, people hear the sound.鈥

Though Johnny Drille takes a different sonic and thematic approach, “Palava” retains the bullish energy and defiance of 鈥淪ample Ekwe,鈥 proving that no matter the genre, some messages remain timeless.

05. 鈥溾 鈥 Ayra Starr (2024)

Sample: 鈥溾 鈥 Wande Coal (ft. D鈥橞anj) (2009)

Ayra Starr takes us straight to the dance floor with 鈥溾 a tribute to her label boss, Don Jazzy, and his favourite track, . She sets the tone for a night of intoxication and pure, unfiltered fun. From her verse to the hook and the sampled beat progression, every part of the song keeps the listener engaged.

A standout track from her sophomore album, The Year I Turned 21, “Jazzy鈥檚 Song” also holds deeper significance. 鈥淵ou Bad鈥 isn鈥檛 just Don Jazzy鈥檚 favourite song鈥攈e produced it, and Wande Coal, its original performer, was once signed to Jazzy鈥檚 legendary Mo鈥 Hits Records. A true full-circle moment.

04. “” 鈥 OluwaMillar (ft. Evangelist Dr. Dunni Olarenwaju & Layo Isaac) (2025)

Sample: “” 鈥 Evangelist Dr. Dunni Olanrewaju (2000)

When it was released, the South-West Christian household buzzed with 鈥溾 in 2000. The song remains relevant as a popular gospel and church classic and resonates with believers in a new decade. Its message and beats find a place by 24-year-old multilingual rapper OluwaMillar.

“Opelope Anointing” loosely translates to “Thankfully for the anointing” or “If not for the anointing.” Evangelist Dunni Olanrewaju鈥檚 original song expresses gratitude for divine protection鈥擥od鈥檚 anointing that shields her from spiritual battles and detractors.

OluwaMillar鈥檚 version follows a similar theme but through moody rap verses and personal storytelling. He reflects on his struggles and triumphs, ultimately recognizing that he鈥檚 been chosen by God. Layo Isaac closes out the song by softly modulating the chorus of the original, bringing a heartfelt, full-circle moment to this powerful rap joint.

03. “” 鈥 Odunsi (The Engine) (2023)

Sample: “” 鈥 Ruff Rugged N Raw (2005)

Odunsi (The Engine) channels nostalgia on 鈥溾 sampling Ruff Rugged N Raw鈥檚 classic of the same name. Both versions share a similar tempo, beat patterns, and feel-good energy, with Odunsi even lifting parts of the original chorus.

While Odunsi鈥檚 take is all about carefree fun,聽 blends enjoyment with caution鈥攃alling out pretentious friends in the chorus while flexing lyrical dexterity in the verses.

This is a solid homage from Odunsi鈥攑roper big-boy music.

02. “” 鈥 Asake (ft. Travis Scott) (2024)

Sample: “” 鈥 Jazzman Olofin (ft. Adewale Ayuba) (2004)

Asake鈥檚 last album may not have met expectations, but it delivered some standout tracks鈥攐ne of them being 鈥溾, a fast-life anthem featuring Travis Scott. Produced by Sarz and MIKE DEAN, the song rides on high energy, flipping into a vibrant sample. The track loops Adewale Ayuba鈥檚 signature line, 鈥淢a jo, fine girl,鈥 in a way that transforms the original fuji groove into an Afrobeats banger.

The sample shines even brighter with Travis Scott鈥檚 delivery. His first four opening lines subtly weave in the sample, making it feel like it鈥檚 completing his words. Each time he says 鈥渕y,鈥 the sample steps in鈥攅xcept it鈥檚 actually Ayuba鈥檚 鈥淢a鈥 from the original lyric. It鈥檚 a slick, almost magical manipulation that adds to the song鈥檚 dynamic energy.

Both tracks are made for the party, but Active cranks things up a notch鈥攂igger, bolder, and more disruptive.

01. “” 鈥 Rema (2025)

Sample: “” 鈥 Sade (1985)

Forty years after 鈥 first explored unrequited love in a slow, breezy R&B ballad, the song finds new life through 鈥.鈥 Produced by P.Priime, the 2025 track flips the original鈥檚 melancholic yearning into a faster, bouncier groove鈥攕mooth, sultry, and undeniably modern. While Sade鈥檚 lyrics ache for a love that isn鈥檛 fully returned, Rema鈥檚 take feels more playful. He seeks love but delivers his words with the kind of detachment that suggests he may not need it by tomorrow.

Some might call this the carefree Nigerian approach to romance. Or maybe it鈥檚 just a generational shift鈥攚here old-school lovers held on tight, and the new school keeps love at arm鈥檚 length, torn between desire and self-preservation. Either way, Baby (Is It A Crime) is a jam鈥攐ne that makes you croon like a hopeless romantic, even if you have avoidant attachment issues.

Clearly, listeners can鈥檛 get enough. It鈥檚 Rema鈥檚 first release of 2025, and it鈥檚 already sitting at number one on Apple Music Nigeria鈥檚 Top 100.

In a Lonely Mood

鈥淜okoro Ife鈥 鈥 Gabriel Afolayan

Highly recommended for anyone in a relationship.

鈥淔orever Sweet鈥 鈥 DOTTi The Deity

19. 鈥淓ze Ebube鈥 鈥 Neon Adejo

There’s a song for every state of mind, and 鈥淓ze Ebube鈥 captures two: thanksgiving and backsliding. ties them together as he reflects on his journey, recalling how far he鈥檚 come in his faith walk and crediting his growth to God.

With heavy keyboard and guitar riffs swelling in the background, Neon鈥檚 voice projects loudly 鈥 as loud as his convictions. He鈥檚 backed by a large choir that complements rather than overwhelms him. Every singer hits their notes with precision, never missing a cue.

18. 鈥淲orthy of My Praise鈥 鈥 Dunsin Oyekun feat. Lawrence Oyor

The trueness of God and the devotion to those who worship him is at the heart of this song. 鈥淔rom my spirit to my soul until my voice re-echoes / You’re worthy of my praise,鈥 and sing, making this the perfect anthem when words of thanksgiving escape you.

Its production rumbles with the deep, roaring baritones of these ministers, seamlessly shifting from singing praises to reciting lines for the choir to echo. Lawrence is the melody box, while Dunsin carries the fire of a prayer warrior, effortlessly moving from rhythm into speaking in tongues. But this song is more than its powerful lyrics. As the lead voices soar, the choir provides a grounding calm, turning the performance into something beyond just music 鈥 an out-of-body experience, abstract yet deeply felt.

Reminisce has already made songs about the pains and joys of fatherhood, but 鈥淰ibes鈥 stands out in his catalogue. It鈥檚 Baba Hafusa at his rawest.

#BumpThis: New Year, Big Energy /pop/bumpthis-new-year-big-energy/ Fri, 17 Jan 2025 20:13:26 +0000 /?p=337891 We’re starting 2025 off right with a #BumpThis playlist that’s all about great music and positive energy. From Afrobeats to Alt茅 and Hip-Hop, we’re serving up the best recent Nigerian tracks to bump to.

Think chart-topping hits, underground gems, and everything in between.

鈥淭his Year鈥 鈥 Jaywon

Jaywon speaks positivity into his year on this classic song. It’s been twelve years since he put 鈥淭his Year鈥 out and it’s still a go-to at every end and start of a new year.

鈥淗oly Ghost鈥 鈥 Omah Lay

This song is basically a prayer and there are some prayers on the track you can still make in 2025: 鈥淗oly Ghost fire, supernatural, give me confidence.鈥

鈥淥loun鈥 鈥 PayBac iBoro featuring Payper Corleone

鈥淪wear to God, I must pop / Get the keys to the drop, Oloun!鈥 is the declaration PayBac makes in the chorus of this track about making it in life. This is the energy to take into the year.

鈥淥rganise鈥 鈥 Asake

If you’re trying to lock in this new year and you鈥檙e disorganised, it鈥檇 likely be hard to get your affairs in order. Asake advises you to organise, AKA plan, and to never form I-Too-Know.

鈥淏etter Off鈥 鈥 Deela & Genio Bambino

Deela addresses people who like to take from others without providing value or usefulness in return. She鈥檚 focusing her energy on only folks who reciprocate the good energy she gives out. If you respect yourself, you should borrow energy from this jam.

鈥淓nergy (Stay Far Way)鈥 鈥 Skepta and Wizkid

It’s a long year and you can’t predict all the bad belle things that might happen to you. Again, protecting your energy is highly essential and you need to hold this song to constantly remind you.

鈥淢y Ability鈥 鈥 Lady Donli

You should never reduce yourself or dim your light for anyone. Always kick self-doubt to the curb and shine your genius at what you do best, like Lady Donli sings in the song.

鈥淪tubborn鈥 鈥 Victony and Asake

Stubborn isn鈥檛 telling you to be a nuisance or disturb others. The ginger to take away from here is to stand ten-toes on your business and ambitions all the time.

鈥淢ega Money Money鈥 鈥 Tiwa Savage

It’s only one life. Don’t forget to enjoy yourself and live to the fullest this year. Chase money and spend it well on yourself. You deserve it.

鈥淔unmi Lowo鈥 鈥 Aramide featuring Sir Dauda

This year, don’t accept exposure as payment. Make sure that you get paid your worth. If anyone plays with your money, tell them 鈥淏itch, better have my money鈥 like Aramide commands in this song.

#BumpThis: Afrobeats Girl Power /pop/bumpthis-afrobeats-girl-power/ Fri, 06 Dec 2024 16:07:02 +0000 /?p=336419 The term 鈥淕irl Power鈥 which symbolises strength, resilience, and beauty has long been etched in the fabric of African culture.

In Afrobeats, this idea of Girl Power has been celebrated, explored, and redefined by some of Nigeria’s most talented female artists. From Tiwa Savage’s empowering anthems to Yemi Alade’s rallying cries for female independence, these women have used their music to weave narratives that uplift, inspire, and celebrate the strong African woman.

In this edition of #BumpThis, we’re curating a playlist that honours the spirit of Girl Power鈥攁 playlist that showcases the best of Afrobeats’ female artists and their contributions to the genre.

So Beautiful 鈥 Asa

Asa dedicates 鈥淪o Beautiful鈥 to her mother. Although Asa鈥檚 mother has passed, she eulogises and asks us to join her to thank her mother. Powerful record.

T-Unit 鈥 Tems

What’s Girl Power without confidence? In T-Unit, Tems gets confident in her artistry, proud of what she鈥檚 achieved in a short time. She’s also protective of her gift, identity and energy, so much that she can go to war for them. Aside from being a praise and encouragement to self, it’s an inspiration to other aspiring women.

African Woman 鈥 Yemi Alade feat. Angelique Kidjo

鈥淎frican Woman鈥 is one of the standout songs on Yemi Alade’s new album, Rebel Queen. It calls on celebrating African girls and women everywhere and every day. Angelique Kidjo, an older champion of African music meets Yemi Alade, a younger generation standing on her shoulders. If there are Nigerian contemporary pop artists who have completely thrown themselves into exalting the image of the African feminine, Yemi Alade will come on top. Building on her previous works such as King of Queens, Mama Africa, Woman of Steel, Empress, Queendoncom, African Baddie, her latest, 鈥淩ebel Queen鈥, continues to eulogise African women and beauty.

Pan African Rockstar 鈥 Lady Donli

After adopting the 鈥淧an African Rockstar鈥 title, Lady Donli expanded it into a full-length album. The titular song, which captures the album鈥檚 central theme, makes her case for fulfilling her musical dream and the hard work and effort it takes to be great at her craft. This is a celebration of her personal achievement and the ground she has covered in her musical journey.

Woman Commando 鈥 Ayra Starr feat. Anitta and Coco Jones

With the supreme knowledge of self comes a fierce awareness. Ayra Starr, assured of her brilliance and suave, presents herself as a Commando. She’s trained and always ready to carry out the smoothest and most impressive missions, as an artist, climbing the biggest music stages and charts. Anitta and Coco Jones from America joined her on this record鈥攊t really shows Ayra鈥檚 mission to spread her African girl joy across the world.

Koroba 鈥 Tiwa Savage

Whether you wear African waist beads or not, this jam trolls misogynistic and patriarchal societal expectations placed on African women who choose to live a life of enjoyment. If you like, accuse her of dating a politician because she can afford air travel and luxury deisgner goods, she’s not bothered. Tiwa Savage is simply saying that you can’t shame her for wanting a life of enjoyment.

As I Dey 鈥 Omawumi

Taking from Omawumi鈥檚 debut album, Wonder Woman, I look at the song 鈥淎s I Dey,鈥 which raises a strong relationship issue. She sings about an understanding partner, not the gullible type, the one who鈥檚 nonjudgmental and gives grace. She talks about the busy nature of her job as a musician and how her partner should consider that when she鈥檚 unavailable. Omawumi makes her stance: if you won’t take her as she is, leave her alone.

The Truth 鈥 Waje

Waje鈥檚 debut album is titled Words Aren’t Just Enough, an acronym of her stage name. It’s not a mistake that she has a lot to say on 鈥淭he Truth,鈥 the opening of Red Velvet, her second album. She sets herself free by telling the truth to a lover she doesn’t love deeply. But maybe it’s good the man knows where her head is at. This ballad is about letting go of love that isn’t meant to be. Be like Waje, tell the truth today and be free from that relationship baggage.

Woman to Woman 鈥 Simi

鈥淲oman to woman鈥 suggests women appreciating, empowering, uplifting each other. This is Simi鈥檚 love letter to all women.

#BumpThis: Christmas Jams (Afrobeats Edition) /pop/bumpthis-christmas-jams-afrobeats-edition/ Fri, 29 Nov 2024 14:20:08 +0000 /?p=336103 Christmas is just around the corner, and you know what that means 鈥 it’s time to grab your partner, put on that pyjamas, and mount Christmas trees and lights. But, let’s be real, the same old Christmas playlist can get pretty stale. That’s why we’re shaking things up with a special Afrobeats edition of our #BumpThis this week.

Whether you’re hosting a Christmas party, or just need some fresh tunes to get you in the mood, this playlist is guaranteed to bring the heat.

It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas 鈥 Timi Dakolo

Is the harmattan blowing stronger in your area? Are your plans for Detty December in conversation? Are Christmas trees shining everywhere you turn to? These are the symptoms of the Christmas season. This is the song for you.

Christmas Is Here 鈥 Teni

Teni Makanaki hopes that Christmas is exciting, satisfying, and filled with love and happiness. With her lyrics calmly delivered and melodies carefully placed on the guitar strings, she sounds the celebratory mood of Yuletide.

Keresimesi 鈥 Mo’cheeda

The wait for Keresimesi (Yoruba for Christmas) is almost over. Until then, let Mo鈥檆heedah鈥檚 call on the masses to rejoice for Christ is born fill the airwaves. Following in the footsteps of the likes of Mariah Carey Mo鈥檆heedah even made a 5-track EP titled True Christmas under Knighthouse Entertainment in 2013.

Olugbala (Saviour) 鈥 Tosinger

Tosinger sings about the symbolism of Christmas鈥攖he birth of the world’s saviour鈥攁ccording to the Christian faith. She interpolates the popular Yoruba Christmas song 鈥淎bi Olugbala Kan Fun Wa鈥 to add local and nostalgic flavours. This song reminds one of Christmas carols in primary school.

Yellow Christmas 鈥 Moelogo

Moelogo takes, likely, his favourite bright colour鈥攜ellow鈥攁nd adds more vibrancy to the already red Christmas. This is a toast to Christmas and everyone who celebrates it.

Xmas 鈥 Yonda

Yonda taps into his white-garment church influence to open this jumpy song about Christmas. He declares December 25th his day of miracles, blessings, and good tidings.

Keresimesi 鈥 Skales

When Skales was signed to Empire Mates Entertainment (EME) and still actively rapped, 鈥淜eresimesi鈥 was one of the songs he churned out. Although the song may be unpopular, the Wizkid-assisted chorus will guarantee a head-bop. From manifesting that money and babes come with Christmas to filling stomachs, this song captures young people鈥檚 expectations of yuletide.

Jingle Bell Bell 鈥 Tunde Ednut feat. M.I, Orezi & Falz

Tunde Ednut grabs singer Orezi and rappers M.I and Falz for a follow-up version of his 2012 star-studded 鈥淛ingle Bell鈥 song. Although not close to its OG version, its recency and features add a new spice to the song.

Merry Christmas O! 鈥 Yemi Alade

This song gives the compliment of the season. If the jollification of Christmas and its other merries are what you are here for, Yemi Alade made this song for you.

I鈥檒l Give You Love This Christmas 鈥 Ric Hassani

As other people share gifts during the festive period, Mr. Ric Hassani plans to share his love with his lover. Whether kind gestures of romance or bedroom loving, this is a warm song for Christmas.
