The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has opened an investigation into an incident involving Fuji music icon King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1. The incident occurred following a reported disruption on a ValueJet flight from Abuja to Lagos on Tuesday, August 5, 2025.
In released on Wednesday, FAAN alleged that the veteran musician violated airport security protocols by attempting to board the aircraft with a liquid-filled flask, exceeding the 100ml limit permitted by aviation regulations. According to FAAN, when asked to surrender the item, KWAM 1 refused, leading to a confrontation with airport officials and the flight captain.
The authority further claimed that during the altercation, the musician spilled the contents of the flask鈥攂elieved to be alcohol鈥攐n a security officer and proceeded to move toward the front of the aircraft, where he allegedly refused to vacate the area despite multiple requests. He was subsequently escorted off the plane by Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel.
鈥淭he authority would not tolerate any actions that compromise operational integrity or undermine aviation safety standards, regardless of the individual involved,鈥 the agency said in its statement, adding that it would pursue a thorough investigation and enforce any necessary sanctions.

KWAM 1 Denies Misconduct
In response, KWAM 1鈥檚 management team issued a statement denying the allegations and accusing FAAN of misrepresenting the incident. They claimed that the flask contained plain drinking water, not alcohol, and that the musician had not resisted security officers or disrupted the flight in any way.
鈥淲e wish to categorically state that this narrative is not only exaggerated but also misleading,鈥 the statement read. 鈥淎t no point did K1 act in a manner that endangered lives or breached safety regulations. The substance in question was not more than plain drinking water鈥 Claims that k1 blocked the aircraft or attempted to disrupt operations are completely unfounded.鈥
His team also alleged that representatives from FAAN and ValueJet later apologised for the misunderstanding and offered him a private jet to continue his journey鈥攁n offer the musician declined.

Regulatory Context
Under Nigeria鈥檚 aviation security guidelines, liquids in containers larger than 100ml are prohibited in carry-on luggage, in line with global aviation standards. Exceptions are made only for medically necessary liquids, which must be declared in advance.
The incident comes at a time of heightened scrutiny of airport security procedures across the country. In a separate development, ValueJet recently came under fire after two of its pilots were suspended by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) over unrelated safety violations.
Next Steps
FAAN has confirmed that it is reviewing video footage and collecting eyewitness statements as part of its internal probe. It remains unclear whether KWAM 1 will face any formal sanctions. The musician鈥檚 representatives say they are cooperating fully with authorities.
As public debate continues, the case has reignited conversations around celebrity privilege, aviation safety, and enforcement of regulations within Nigeria鈥檚 air transport sector.
FAAN has not given a timeline for the conclusion of the investigation.
