I鈥檝e covered quite a number of weddings, so you can usually tell when something feels off. The d茅cor was almost entirely red with heavy traditional aesthetics, and the groom looked like he was in his late 50s while the bride couldn鈥檛 have been older than her mid-20s. He was obviously wealthy.
Halfway through the reception, we heard loud chanting outside. Suddenly, shirtless men in white wrappers and barefoot women dressed the same way walked into the venue. They marched to the stage and continued chanting. The groom calmly stood up and joined them. That鈥檚 when everyone realised he belonged to whatever group they were part of. The display lasted about 20 minutes before they left, but the atmosphere never recovered. Even the bride looked blindsided.

Everything was running smoothly until it was time for the groom and his groomsmen to dance into the reception. The moment the alaga announced their entrance, a woman suddenly blocked the doorway with a basket and declared that nobody was entering unless they dropped money. Apparently, she was the groom鈥檚 stepmother.
At first, everyone thought she was joking, but she wasn鈥檛. She refused to let anyone pass without paying at least 鈧1k. The alaga begged her to stop delaying the programme, but she refused to budge. The groom鈥檚 parents came over to intervene, and she still stood her ground. Eventually, the groomsmen reluctantly started dropping money just to move things along. The whole drama lasted almost an hour, and by then the entire hall knew what was happening.

The bride鈥檚 mum eventually climbed the stage, assured everyone the food was safe, and even tasted it herself to calm people down. It was so awkward. Despite her efforts, almost every table still had plates of food left untouched by the end of the reception.

Guests quickly rushed in to separate them and eventually escorted the ex out. Thankfully, it happened during the after-party when the music was loud and the lights were dim, so many guests didn鈥檛 even realise what had happened.

He started shouting, asking what kind of disgrace he was witnessing on his daughter鈥檚 wedding day. Then he called the groom鈥檚 parents, his wife and a few close relatives into the dressing room. Before everyone else came in, he slapped the bride across the face. Once the family gathered, they asked everyone else to step outside, so I never found out what was discussed.
