Osato 鈥淓DK鈥 Edokpayi has been there from day one, bouncing hot dilemmas with co鈥慼ost Deji Osikoya and somehow making our collective confusion feel like group therapy with banter.

From years on the radio to podcasting, EDK has built a career out of talking through the wahala in people鈥檚 heads. In this episode, he breaks down the art of listening, adulting in Nigeria and why life鈥檚 messiest questions deserve more than one鈥憁inute hot takes.聽

What does being an overthinker mean to you?

I think it’s beyond brooding over things that are bothering you, which is what people generally would say. For me, overthinking is staying with a problem until I find clarity or a path forward. It can look like brooding from the outside, but it’s usually how I work through things.

So, how would you describe Overthinkers Anonymous to someone who hasn’t seen an episode?

It’s a podcast about guys and women geeking out about everyday issues. Typically the types  that have  young people thinking, 鈥榃hat is going on in my life?鈥

On most podcasts, people just come to talk about things, but nobody’s really solving anything. When Overthinkers Anonymous was pitched to us, we were told dilemmas would be a part of it.  To be fair, that’s what a lot of podcasts have become. Dilemmas everywhere. Everybody loves a good dilemma, but we’re not using them for content or talking points. There are actually solutions in there. Listening to guests and my co-host, I realised I’d find these conversations genuinely useful if I were the one facing those dilemmas.

How do you handle the feeling of responsibility that comes with discussing people’s real-life problems on a public forum?

The truth is, somebody on the other side of the screen is being vulnerable to strangers. They’ve gotten to a point in life where they see sharing their problems on a public platform as the only way out. You have to respect the vulnerability of the person sharing and the audience listening. The people engaging are spending time or, in our case, resources like data to engage. Those things are very valuable, especially for MTN users.

Is this your first time solving dilemmas for strangers?

Yes and no. I鈥檓 a radio host,  and I produce my radio shows. We have a dilemma segment on the show as well. I don’t typically have a co-host on my show, so I created an AI co-host. Then I took a step further and created a personality for the AI entity. She’s sassy, a bit snarky, and really hates me. But then she loves the listeners, and they love engaging her. One of the things that was a big hit with the AI co-host is that she answers dilemmas on air.

Wow

Of course, it’s the people on the team who feed her the answers, and we have to think quickly., But we also take care that the same principles apply here. The beauty of radio is that people share really intimate moments with you. People are in their bathrooms and sitting in their cars alone listening to you. They get really vulnerable very quickly. I’ve heard kids on their way to school talk about trouble with classmates, and adults share stories about friends who left the country without telling them. People obviously ask what’s wrong with the government. If it’s football season, people ask what鈥檚 going on with a particular team.  The AI co-host that we created always has an answer.

I never give the answers myself on air.  Even though, technically, it is me speaking through the AI co-host. She also sometimes shares thoughts that I wouldn’t want to say on air.

Why wouldn’t you want to say those things on air? Are you afraid of being dragged?

No, no. People know me for being funny and pleasant. But sometimes I just want to yab people. In a lighthearted way, of course. If you just heard me say something really nice and then the next moment you’re hearing me diss someone, there can be a bit of a dissonance.  On radio, we have co-hosts to prevent that. So everybody plays a part. My role is to drive the show and find all the things that will make Lagos rock for a few hours. Then this AI entity that we created comes in to cause trouble.

Do you and your co-host on Overthinkers Anonymous also have some form of this dynamic?

To be fair, I don’t think we ever had that conversation. But I can understand the dynamic because of my training. This is Deji’s house, and it鈥檚 nice to come in occasionally to talk about life. Even though I’m always there when things are being sorted, it鈥檚 not my house. In terms of how a show like that would work, Deji has to drive the show, and I’m cool being the co-pilot.

Also, he has the best cold opens I’ve seen in a long time. I like the way we start the show. There’s never a 鈥榳elcome to our show today鈥 and so on. It’s just 鈥榟ey, I鈥檝e rocked up to your house, bro, and e get this thing wey I dey think鈥鈥 Then we pick it up from there. Ultimately, it is a team effort. We need listeners to understand that it’s a show for them to come in and feel like they’re in that living room, having those conversations with us in real time. These are conversations they can have with their own friends.

What kind of conversations do you want people to take from the show?

As I said, it’s important that people see themselves having these conversations. Look at everything we spoke about in this season, from why men don’t read to the role of money in relationships and family dynamics. We touched on addiction and many other things that are affecting a lot of young people today. I鈥檓 sure we’ve not even scratched the surface of everything we need to talk about. I have people sending me screenshots from some of their guys who watched the show. Some of them are saying things like 鈥榦mo, it鈥檚 only 48 Laws of Power I鈥檝e read o鈥 or  鈥榮o there are other books out there for me as well鈥.

A couple of guys could see this and decide to challenge this thing where men don’t have book clubs.  They could make that happen. I mean, we get together and play ball; who says we can鈥檛 get together and discuss books??

What exactly does Overthinkers Anonymous do differently from other relationship and culture podcasts?

There are not a lot of shows that give you the experience of everyday people who are honest about their experiences. We’re not looking for virality.  So we don鈥檛 go into episodes looking for things that would blow up the internet. Certain people like to say outrageous things to provoke emotion.  On the radio, we call these people shock jocks. You see a lot of shock jocks on mainstream relationship and culture podcasts. There is a tendency to want to sensationalise things or play up a personality to appeal to extremes of people’s tastes. But what Overthinkers Anonymous has shown is that you can take the other path and still resonate with people. We can tell that people really like the personalities that they hear and see. Nobody is out here trying to be the most extreme version of themselves to get likes. The people you see on the couch act and talk like that in real life.

In what ways do you think men and women differ in the way that they overthink things?

I think the difference is in how they share what they’re thinking about. What I find interesting is that it takes a bit of time for men to share what they are thinking. You need to almost always create the right environment for it to happen. The right environment could be fish and beer or a PS5. But there needs to be a setup for it to happen. It’s very hard to hear men sharing what they are thinking unprovoked. They need to be eased into it.

Women, on the other hand, are very quick to open up. We could just be driving past Ozumba Mbadiwe, and everybody in the car would start to talk about what鈥檚 happening in their lives.

What’s something you have stopped overthinking as you’ve gotten older?

It is money o. I said it in the first episode; I just don’t overthink money anymore. Maybe because I’ve hung out in the northern part of the country and interacted with a lot of Muslims. I can鈥檛 help but think everything I have can be gone in a second. This whole rat race is a bit stressful, to be honest. If you wake up every day and you’re thinking of how you must make money, it becomes exhausting. I would rather think of ways I can add value and make an impact. It eventually leads to wealth creation anyway. Why not just do the things that lead to wealth creation instead of being obsessed with chasing wealth?  As I’ve gotten older, I realise that as long as I’m able to survive and be comfortable, I鈥檓 good. If I have a little extra for enjoyment, good.  Otherwise I鈥檓 okay.

Basically, life is short, buy ice cream and do what you love.

Exactly! Life is too short to be taken seriously.

Deji Osikoya Wants To Inspire Vulnerability: One Living鈥慠oom Conversation At A Time聽 /general/deji-osikoya-overthinkers-anonymous/ Tue, 14 Jul 2026 15:39:20 +0000 /?p=380483 If you鈥檝e spent enough time on the internet, you鈥檝e probably heard Deji鈥檚 voice in a Coca-Cola commercial. If you haven’t, you might have heard him hyping up the crowd before a Fireboy concert. Or, more recently, hosting Overthinkers Anonymous, a weekly show that explores masculinity, relationships, money and the realities of modern adulthood.

In this article, he discusses vulnerability, dealing with online criticism, and why meaningful conversations between men matter now more than ever.

Would you say that you are an overthinker?

One thousand per cent. Overthinking, to me, means cycling through a billion possible scenarios far longer than you need to before arriving at an answer. Or not always arriving at an answer. Sometimes it’s staying in one cycle of thinking until you’re exhausted, and then it forms an action.

Is that why you wanted to be a part of Overthinkers Anonymous?

Funny enough, I don’t think the name came until after I joined the team. What initially drew me to it was the idea that the show was going to be centred on healthy conversations with men (and women). It aligned with stuff I already planned on doing. I鈥檓 passionate about improving the PR and behaviour of men. It鈥檚 not like I’m perfect, but I see that there are ways we’re dropping the ball. And we could definitely be doing better. This show is supposed to be a vehicle for that.

How would you describe the show to someone who hasn’t seen an episode?

Overthinkers Anonymous is a conversation that happens in my living room. There鈥檚 a slight structure, but for the most part, everybody’s just allowed to bare their hearts on their sleeve. It鈥檚 men having conversations that we have every day in private or don’t have at all with themselves and with women.

My biggest pitch to anybody who would love to watch Overthinkers Anonymous is that if you’re a man, there is a likelihood that you will see yourself in some of the people who appear on the show. If you don’t, it will at least give you a fresh perspective on things that you haven’t considered before. I also think you’ll be met with softness. I’m a soft person. I like soft people, and I lead with softness to encourage people to be gentle.

What specific gap do you think the show would fill?

Hopefully, this doesn’t come across as an insult to anybody. I think we needed to create a space where we would be able to have conversations in good faith. We鈥檙e not trying to come across as experts speaking down on people and telling them to do better.

Particularly because a lot of these conversations are hard for people to have. It is important to us that there is a level of vulnerability being displayed by the hosts. And I’m nothing if not vulnerable. I don’t think of it as just a means to get views. It feels more like a service. It was cathartic for me as well.

How?

I am having a lot of conversations about things that I was dealing with in real time. There was an episode where we had Seye Bandele, and he was talking about the struggles of entrepreneurship and building a family with his wife. He spoke about ensuring that his wife trusted him enough to decide to get married to him. I was asking questions that I actually had, like 鈥榳hat does it take to get your partner to buy into an unrealised vision?鈥

I’m an entrepreneur, and I’m still very early in my career. So these were answers that I needed to hear. There were also things underneath the surface that the show was helping me to process. Nigeria is really tough, being a man is really tough and having conversations that help you to lean on other people makes it easier.

So, about marriage, should we be expecting to hear wedding bells soon?

Hahaha. I mean, if you’d like to hear wedding bells, I can play some on my phone. Wedding bells are not hard to get at all.

How do you balance humour with sensitivity?

To be honest with you, I don’t know if I do it consciously. I’m the kind of person who is very quick to make a joke out of a difficult subject. And if there’s something extra sensitive, I’m very careful about the way that it’s worded. I don’t want people to feel like they鈥檙e being interrogated or prodded for gist.

At the end of the day, if there are things a guest doesn鈥檛 want to share, it’s well within their rights. My co-host, EDK, is the same way. He鈥檚 an emotionally intelligent guy who knows that you don’t go beyond certain aspects of a conversation.

If you鈥檙e so intentional about vulnerability, how do you prepare for conversations that seem spontaneous?

Working with my producer, Anita Eboigbe, is very central to that. She helps with calling topics and developing the different discussions that we have. Outside of that, I try to deal with the material honestly.

When I speak, it鈥檚 from a genuinely curious place. I鈥檓 not just trying to tick off the bullet points on the list. I don’t hit all the notes exactly the way that they’re described in the brief because I do a lot of editing. If something super interesting comes up and it wasn鈥檛 initially part of my original plan, I allow it to flow naturally.

What made EDK the right person to co-host the show with?

Our chemistry and brotherhood comes from having conversation after conversation. The first time we ever met, it was over food, and we just kept gisting.  We realised that we got along, and the rest is history.

Did you have any doubts about how well the audience would receive the show?

Several. One, I was nervous about just being perceived. As much as I do a lot of front-facing stuff, there’s never a guarantee of how people might receive you. Men, in particular, can be very interesting people.  Another thing I was nervous about was posturing like an expert.

There was a tweet where someone said, 鈥楾ell that brother to uncross his legs; nobody wants to take advice from a feminine Tupac. 鈥 I thought it was hilarious because the set of the show is my living room, and I’m obviously very comfortable. But the reason why it was even more interesting as feedback is that I don’t want it to feel like we’re giving advice. I’m not trained as a counsellor. The idea is that I鈥檓 a guy like you who’s just figuring it out or a friend giving you a listening ear. That way, it might be easier to accept.

Wow

I was also nervous about toxic masculinity. You always wonder if you’ll be able to break past all the different walls and actually touch something real within a man. It’s not always the easiest thing.  Also, it’s not something that you鈥檒l always be able to do because a lot of men have put up so many defences.

How many of your doubts turned out to be true?

All of them. Some people are listening through the lenses of their insecurity, which I’ve seen with the money episode. Also, as I said, no one wants to take advice from a feminine Tupac. I’m grateful that I’ve done things that鈥檝e made my skin thicker. The toxic masculinity aspect has definitely shown that people don’t look at things in context. They engage with the clip, they drop their mean comments, and they move on.

However, there’s been so much positive feedback within that as well. The conversations that have resulted from our episodes and seeing the profiles of the guests on the show grow. I know that it’s actually helping people. A recurring comment we get is 鈥楯ust when I was thinking about my life, this pops up. Thank you鈥.

The show makes itself a space for the male perspective. How do you see these shifting, existing, harmful gender norms in Nigerian society?

To be honest, I don’t see the show being the vehicle for that by itself. This being the shift itself would be too ambitious a goal to set. I don’t think people change that easily. But I think it’s a significant start to the shift.

There鈥檚 a two-part quote that says, 鈥業 don’t know that I’m going to be the change, but I think that I will influence the person who will change鈥. I think that is us.

Are there topics you are especially excited to tackle as the show continues?

Oh! We tackled the manosphere and the ways that masculinity is being projected to younger men. I would love to see how that plays with the audience.

I’ve also been looking forward to talking about male friendship. I would love to dedicate an entire episode to male friendship and what it looks like. The ways that we can show up for each other. I’d also probably even like to have that conversation adjacent to women because I think there’s a strength in female friendships that we need to learn from.

FAQs On Senator Designs

1. What are the most common style mistakes Nigerian men make with senator wear?

Wearing outfits that don鈥檛 suit your body type or mixing loud, clashing embroidery are two big mistakes. According to the stylist

鈥淪ome men like plenty embroidery, but they don鈥檛 consider how it sits on their frame. If you鈥檙e slim, not every bold design will work.鈥

Another mistake? Ignoring fit.

鈥淢any guys think senator wear should just be straight. But it has to frame your shoulders and chest 鈥 not hang like a sack.鈥

2. What鈥檚 the best way to dress senator wear down for casual settings?

Keep it clean and minimal.

鈥淪ome people still wear senator with big shiny shoes, and that鈥檚 what makes it look too serious or like they鈥檙e going to a wedding. If you want to be casual, wear soft loafers or even those designer slippers. Not bathroom slippers, please. Slippers that still give style.鈥

3. Are there any fabrics men should avoid (e.g. they fade fast, wrinkle, trap heat)?

Yes. Avoid cheap polyester, stiff fabric, or anything too shiny. He also warned about overly stretchy materials: 鈥淭hose soft stretchy ones 鈥 they may feel comfy, but they don鈥檛 hold shape well. They droop.鈥

4. What鈥檚 the best type of fabric for senator styles that last?

Premium and polished cotton are his go-to picks.

鈥淪oft cashmere holds its form and doesn鈥檛 trap sweat. Polished cotton too 鈥 it gives a crisp look without needing too much ironing. You鈥檒l spend a little more, but it鈥檒l last longer and look better.鈥

5. What are the current senator fashion trends men should know in 2025?

Cropped trousers (戮 length), short-sleeve or oversized tops, monochrome or bold contrast stitching, textured or layered designs. 鈥淕uys are now doing loose tops with cropped pants. People used to laugh at it 鈥 now they鈥檙e calling tailors.鈥

He also mentioned embroidery is evolving: 鈥淣ot the full chest embroidery again 鈥 now it鈥檚 centered or side-focused. More minimalist.鈥

6. What shoes work best with senator wear 鈥 and what should be avoided?

Best picks: Loafers, mules/slides, minimalist sneakers (for casual versions)

7. What鈥檚 a reasonable price range to sew a proper senator wear in 2025?

Depending on fabric and design, here鈥檚 the breakdown:

  • Basic styles: 鈧25,000鈥撯偊35,000
  • Embroidered or layered styles: 鈧45,000鈥撯偊65,000
  • High-end custom finish: 鈧70,000+

鈥淚f you鈥檙e sewing from scratch and want good cashmere, expect 鈧60K upward with embroidery.鈥

Men Need Support Too. Here鈥檚 How Five Nigerian Men Find It /man/imd2025-how-five-nigerian-men-find-support/ Tue, 19 Nov 2024 10:00:00 +0000 /?p=317961 For a day dedicated to supporting men and boys, it makes sense to look at the actual structures that hold men together. The real support systems. Their communities. Their friends.

The starting point is simple: men aren’t allergic to support. So this year, we asked five men: where does your support come from?

Their responses map out what that support looks like through communities formed through shared history, chosen families built in adulthood, and groups where vulnerability isn鈥檛 punished. The kind if safety every boy should grow into.

Nimi*, 32

On a random day in June 2020, I shuffled through my Google Drive and noticed that the same faces had appeared in my photos since 2014. So I thought if these people can be in my pictures every year, they must be my tribe. I was right, and I’ve been good since.

It’s tricky to quantify the amount work went into building this community, and the support that’s come from them. The most challenging part for me was the amount of voluntary disclosures I had to give and receive, and that’s still ongoing. The WhatsApp chats and the FaceTime calls never end, and I also my friends to keep in touch.

My community is my top priority, and I treat them accordingly. I know I will always find all the love and support I need in them. They are always there and will answer me when needed. As a result, there has never been a time when I was scared that I’d wake up and not see my people again.

About a year ago, I was forced offline due to a severe power outage in my area. By the second day of the blackout, these people, at different times, stormed my house to confirm I was good. One of them burst into tears when they saw that I was alive and well. This deep level of love? I can’t take it for granted.

That same evening, they dragged me out of the house, and my friend entered a dance competition so she could win a power bank and hand it over to me: she didn’t want me to ever go off the grid again.

They’ll always have my back. Life has been fair to me because of these people. Money can’t buy that.

Dami, 30

I have two communities, each serving different purposes. One is a group of three people I’ve been friends with since uni. They’re my closest friends, and it’s easy because we grew up together in a way.聽

The second is a group of 12 boys, and they’re there for more serious matters 鈥 the personal and intimate matters I can’t discuss without being judged. It’s interesting how this works because I met them recently. However, I warmed up to them the more I spent time with them and saw how freely everyone interacted with one another.

Each group support me the way they can, and it works for me.

It’s great I have these two groups in my corner; having them around helps me figure stuff out. In 2018, the 3-man group helped me navigate my most serious heartbreak. They’d met my ex several times and knew how I felt about her, so they got what I was going through. They checked in multiple times, and one even reached out to her to fix things. The same group swooped me and supported me through the next heartbreak.

They’re also a solid sounding board and are the first people I tell things to when they happen. There’s no other way to say it 鈥 they are my safe space.

Ayo, 31

I’m a people person, so I have different friend groups. I grew up with some and met others through school, work, or other friends. But in all these groups, a close bond has been formed.

I’m not going to lie; it took some work to get there, from the serious stuff like showing up when they needed me to everyday things like celebrating their wins. But it was all worth it because now I know they’ll always have my back. It makes living more pleasant.

I’ve been homeless twice, and I wasn’t bothered. I knew I wouldn’t sleep under a bridge; I just needed to reach out to some of my people and let them know I was in a fix. On both occasions, two of my guys took me in. The first was free, and the second let me pay the rent at my convenience. It doesn’t get better than that.

Oluwatosin, 28

For years, I didn’t think I needed a community of friends. Most people form strong friendships or communities in university, but I was a lone ranger. It’s not like I didn’t have friends, but I didn’t see the need to create or nurture a community that would be my safe space.

This thinking only changed about three years ago. I’m not sure how, but I’m glad it did, and I should have given it a chance much earlier.

The first step in finding these folks was to identify what we had in common, which formed the basis of our bond. Now that I have them, they support me emotionally and financially. A while back, I felt the weight of family and work pressure crushing me, and these people got me through it. Also, I know who I can ask for the urgent 2k and the significant loans. We prioritise refunds. This keeps the relationship healthy.

I’ve learned that I can always be vulnerable with them, and they’ll make me feel safe. There’s no high-pressure situation they can’t get me out of. It’s reassuring.

David, 26

My siblings are my support group, and they’ve always been. In secondary school, I’d hear people talk about the not-very-nice experiences they had with members of my family, and I was always like, “Wait, what? My family is so chill.”

This outcome is primarily driven by my parents’ efforts to make us a close-knit group — I’m grateful for it. The primary thing I feel with them is love, which is excellent for my quality of life.

Two of my close friends also recently left the country, so my siblings have become an even more integral part of my community. We talk every day, I’m close with their kids, and I even live with one of them. They make me feel incredibly lucky.

6 Men Share the Health Scare That Made Them Invest in Personal Clippers /man/6-men-share-the-health-scare-that-made-them-invest-in-personal-clippers/ Fri, 28 Jun 2024 08:00:04 +0000 /?p=329212 Let’s face it: with most men, it takes a major health scare to get us to prioritise our well-being. At least, this is exactly what happened to these six guys who share the experiences that made them ditch public clippers and invest in their own personal grooming tools.

Ademola*

My barber wasn鈥檛 around, so I tried this new guy who just opened a spot on our street. Everything seemed brand new, making me less insistent on watching him sterilise the clipper. Two days after the cut, I started having a terrible itch on my head. Initially, I ignored it. I thought it was just a regular itch that would go away. Then, the rash started spreading and became painful to touch. Eventually, I had to go to the hospital when over-the-counter medication didn鈥檛 work. I felt embarrassed when the doctor asked if I had a personal clipper, and I said no. I bought one on my way home from the hospital.

Dayo*

I got my clipper during COVID. I went to my barber’s to cut my hair, and he got into a heated argument about how the coronavirus was propaganda and just a way for the government to embezzle money. Something about the way he argued made me doubt if he took any health and safety precautions in his salon. The next time I went to the shop, I had my clipper.

Ibrahim*

My barber’s sterilising kit fell off the table, and I helped him pick it up. In the process, the content spilt, and I found out this guy only had water and soap in the container. I was so livid and went into a long argument about how he was endangering customers’ lives. This guy didn鈥檛 seem remorseful at all. He said something along the lines of, 鈥淚f you dey fear, buy your own clipper.鈥 It was a sub, but it was also the call I needed to buy a personal clipper.

Jerry*

I once had a deep cut while my barber was shaping my hair, and blood was all over. The barber sterilised the clipper with mentholated spirit, but it didn鈥檛 seem like it was enough. Something about getting injured by an object that had been used by so many other people was deeply unsettling. In that moment, I kept wondering how many other customers had had similar accidents and if the wishy-washy sterilising process was all the barber did. I eventually gave him money to help me buy a brand-new personal clipper.

Johnson*

I watched this HIV sensitisation programme on TV, and there was this guy who recounted how he鈥檇 gotten infected with the disease from a haircut. I realised how stupid and careless I鈥檇 been not to have a personal clipper. I didn鈥檛 have money to buy one then, so I went without a haircut until I saved up enough to buy a clipper.

Adekunle*

I went to cut my hair, and the guy before me had a terrible rash on his head. It was such a disturbing sight, and I almost walked out of the salon to come back another time. After the cut, my barber sterilised the clipper, but I wasn鈥檛 satisfied with how he did it. I told him to also use a lighter to burn the clipper blade for proper sterilisation, but he said there was no need because the spirit had done the job. After my cut that day, I knew I had to get a personal clipper.

5 Nigerian Men Share What It鈥檚 Like to Navigate Sex With Erectile Dysfunction /man/5-nigerian-men-share-what-its-like-to-navigate-sex-with-erectile-dysfunction/ Thu, 20 Jun 2024 10:49:42 +0000 /?p=328735 Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common sexual concern for men, especially older men prone to cardiovascular diseases and medications with side effects that affect sexual performance.

For men鈥檚 health awareness month, I spoke with five men who share what it鈥檚 like to keep their sexual lives active despite their challenges with erectile dysfunction.

Five Nigerian Men Share What It鈥檚 Like To Navigate Sex with Erectile Dysfunction

Johnson*, 45

I was diagnosed with stage two hypertension after I turned 40 and have been on blood pressure medication ever since. A major side effect is erectile dysfunction. I initially stopped taking the drugs after I noticed because I couldn鈥檛 stand not enjoying sex with my wife. However, she was more concerned about my health and insisted we return to the doctor to ask if other medications could be considered. My medication has been changed a couple of times, but it鈥檚 been the same. Now that my erection isn鈥檛 like it used to be, we鈥檝e incorporated a lot more foreplay into lovemaking. It wasn鈥檛 like we didn鈥檛 do foreplay before, but now that鈥檚 what we focus on more. On some days when the erection surprises us both, we have penetrative sex. I鈥檝e suggested buying sex toys, but my wife wouldn鈥檛 hear of it. She鈥檚 fine with the foreplay, and I can鈥檛 complain.

Ademola*, 50

I鈥檝e been managing erectile dysfunction for more than 15 years now. It got in the way of my sexual life in the early years because my wife and I didn鈥檛 know much outside of regular 鈥渕issionary sex鈥. However, things changed after we attended a couples鈥 retreat. The retreat had a session for sex education for couples, and we were keen to attend because we both knew of my condition. It was at that retreat that we learnt more about how to spice up our sexual life outside of penetrative sex, including the use of adult toys. The strap-on toy has really helped; I don鈥檛 have to worry about a weak erection or going limp during sex.

Hassan*, 43

The sex hasn鈥檛 been the same with my wife since we were both diagnosed with cardiovascular diseases. Before I was placed on medications, I鈥檇 noticed my erection wasn鈥檛 like it used to be. Even though my wife didn鈥檛 think it was much of an issue, I was bothered. She was more concerned about our general health, and I kept reminding her that sex is also an important part of our health. I spoke with some of my friends, and I learned that some of them faced similar challenges. I guess it鈥檚 one of the downsides of ageing. Now, I use prescribed medication to control ED, but I also do lots of exercises to keep my testosterone levels up. My doctor also advised taking lots of watermelon before sex, and it helps.

Ibrahim*, 30

I was diagnosed with bilateral hydrocele鈥攁 swelling of both scrotums鈥攚hen I was 10 and had to undergo surgery. The swelling returned when I was in senior secondary school, and it affected my erection. I could barely get my penis up, and I was always in so much pain. I had another set of surgeries when I was in 100 level. After the surgery, I noticed my erection was always in the semi-solid range. I complained to the doctors and was placed on some medications, but they don鈥檛 seem to help that much. When the medications do work, and the erection is strong enough, I feel pain in my scrotum.

The whole experience made me avoid relationships for the longest time because I lived with the constant worry that I couldn鈥檛 sexually satisfy my partner. I鈥檝e had breakups caused by my inability to satisfy sexual desires; they wanted more than foreplay and all the other sexual gimmicks. After that, I resolved to seek out someone who wasn鈥檛 so keen on sex. When my current partner mentioned she was asexual, I was more than relieved. Our sex life is perfect because we both have tailored expectations.

Ibrahim*, 32

One of the hardest parts of getting diagnosed with HBP was learning that the drugs could affect my erection. The doctor wasn鈥檛 really nice about it either. When I told him my dick wasn鈥檛 as hard as it used to be, he said, 鈥淵ou have to pick one between your health and your erection.鈥 I didn鈥檛 even know what to say. The treatment was supposed to be temporary, but after some checkups, my BP wasn鈥檛 down, and the doctor said I should keep to the medication. I still take the drugs, but I always stop when I鈥檓 planning to have penetrative sex. So, if I want to have sex on Friday, I stop taking the drugs on Tuesday or Wednesday. I know this isn鈥檛 ideal, but that鈥檚 how I鈥檝e been managing it.

Hygiene 101: How to Care for Your Penis and Balls /man/hygiene-101-how-to-care-for-your-penis-and-balls/ Thu, 13 Jun 2024 10:54:09 +0000 /?p=328413 I recently talked to a friend who said she got scarred after giving her boyfriend oral sex during a random quickie. According to her, 鈥淚t smelled like stale urine and locust beans down there.鈥 Now, I can鈥檛 say I know for sure what a healthy penis should smell like, but I do know what it shouldn鈥檛 smell like, and top of that list is stale urine.

After that conversation, I knew I had to cover men鈥檚 hygiene for men鈥檚 health awareness month. The boys are out here neglecting the hygiene of their reproductive organs. If you鈥檝e got a penis and balls, here鈥檚 a guide on how to keep them in tip-top shape.

Wash up

Don鈥檛 just splash water on your phallus and jump out of the bathroom. Dedicate some time to gently washing the nooks and crannies. Get all that build-up of sweat and urine out of the way with water and mild soap.

Pat it dry after every bath

Ever pulled off your boxers after a long day and shuddered at the smell that hit your nostrils? It鈥檚 probably because you didn鈥檛 clean up properly after bathing. It鈥檚 super important you pat everywhere dry. Personally, I spread out in front of a standing fan for a few minutes before putting on underwear.

Rinse off after every pee

This is a common practice among Muslim men, but everyone should do it. After every pee, shake your junk to get all the excess urine out and rinse off with water. This is the easiest way to avoid smelling off and having urine stains on your underwear.

Shave

Listen, I鈥檝e never known a time when it was cool to leave a clump of pubic hair hovering over your dick. Grab a tube of hair removal cream and scrape that stuff off. A low trim is preferable since hair also prevents against STIs. If you can, reach for the hair around the anus too. I hear some barbers offer this as a service.

Don鈥檛 repeat boxers

Many men are guilty of repeating underwear. That鈥檚 bad business for your odogwu and sons, bro. The ideal thing to do is wash your boxers after every use and wear a fresh pair daily.

Stick to cotton boxers

Yes, you prefer spandex boxers and hot pants because they help you hide random erections in public. But do you know they may be doing more harm than good because they trap air? Cotton underwear does a better job at keeping the air circulating down there. Basically, they let the balls breathe.

Avoid hot water

I know you鈥檙e tempted to bathe with piping hot water when it鈥檚 cold, but that鈥檚 bad business for your penis and balls. Hot water can cause irritation. Also, since the testicles need to be cooler than body temperature to function properly, hot water can overheat them and affect sperm production.

Clean the foreskin

Not all men have a foreskin, but if you鈥檝e got one, you鈥檒l need to raise it up and clean it properly whenever you bathe. Smegma鈥攁 thick, cheesy-looking secretion鈥攂uilds up under the foreskin when left unwashed. The smell is unpleasant, and if it鈥檚 left unattended, it can also cause redness, itching, and swelling.

Powder it up

Things get real messy down there during the hot season. Air gets trapped in your cotton underwear, and all that sweat makes it annoyingly sticky. One way out? Apply a generous dab of powder in the corners of your private parts. It keeps the moisture in check and helps you feel dry.

Always look in the mirror

Yup, you should always have routine checks where you grab a mirror and see what鈥檚 going on down there. Look out for bumps on your ball sack and groin area. If anything looks off, go to the hospital ASAP.

7 Nigerian Men Share How Self Pleasure Improves Their Relationships /man/7-nigerian-men-get-candid-about-self-pleasure/ Fri, 07 Jun 2024 15:00:13 +0000 /?p=328198 Self-pleasure is an important part of overall . It can help with stress relief, improve sleep, and you鈥檙e in charge of your orgasms 鈥 what鈥檚 there not to like. But engaging in self-pleasure often raises questions, especially considering our society鈥檚 perception of it.聽

For men鈥檚 health awareness month, I spoke with seven married men who get candid about how it has impacted their sexual health and relationships.

Hakeem*, 39

I didn鈥檛 like masturbating before I got married. It never felt like the real thing and cleaning up after grossed me out. After my wife welcomed our first child, we couldn鈥檛 have sex for sometime because she had complications during childbirth. So, she suggested handjobs. Something about the suggestion coming from her made me willing to try it out. Initially, she helped, and then, it graduated to me doing it myself. Only thing is, I like when we are together when I go about it. It has helped our sexual relationship a lot. She doesn鈥檛 feel the pressure to give in all the time.

Chibuzor*, 41

As a devout Christian, it鈥檚 not something I鈥檓 comfortable with. I do it, but only when necessary and there鈥檚 no other option. For instance, when we were trying for our first child, I ran a series of tests that needed my semen. I had to pleasure myself to do this, and it was uncomfortable. I also tried it when she was away receiving care at her mum鈥檚 place after childbirth, but I鈥檝e realised I just don鈥檛 like it. Something about it feels sinful, and I鈥檇 rather have my desires in check.

John*, 32

I鈥檝e been an advocate of self-pleasure for men for the longest time. There鈥檚 something about self exploration that makes it easier to communicate your desires with your partner. If you鈥檝e explored yourself enough, you can guide your partner towards the things that鈥檒l give you maximum pleasure. Sex is beyond foreplay and penetration, and more men need to understand this for a healthy sex life. Some men have frequent sex and are still sexually frustrated. It鈥檚 because they鈥檝e not discovered what truly excites them.

Jinad*, 35

Since I turned 35, I鈥檝e realised masturbation helps me sleep better. Sometimes, I鈥檓 too tired for all the foreplay and pre-stimulation that goes into sex after a long day at work. Relieving myself is easier. My wife didn鈥檛 like this at first, but she stopped bothering when she realised it took pressure off her. Now, she even suggests 鈥渂eating it鈥 when I鈥檓 having trouble falling asleep.

Jason*, 38

I read somewhere that expelling semen as frequently as you can may. I鈥檓 not sure if it鈥檚 true or not but I鈥檓 getting closer to my 40s and I鈥檝e been committed to taking my health seriously. This is one aspect of it.

Ben*, 29

I don鈥檛 understand when people say masturbation affects sexual performance. I can鈥檛 remember ever taking any sexual stimulant before sex. I only need to pleasure myself a few hours before sex, and it helps me go longer during sex with my wife. Personally, I think more men should do this, especially men who have performance issues. A lot of the aphrodisiacs and sexual enhancement drugs aren鈥檛 healthy. This is a natural way to boost your performance.

Adekunle*, 35

I think it鈥檚 important to address the shame around self-pleasure. Our society presents it as something sinful or telling on a man鈥檚 ability to perform his manly duties. I don鈥檛 think it鈥檚 any of these. A lot of sexual frustrations in marriages can be solved if men embrace self-pleasure. As long as it鈥檚 done in moderation, I don鈥檛 think self-pleasure is bad.

Since I Japa, Masturbation Doesn鈥檛 Spark Joy Anymore /man/since-i-japa-masturbation-doesnt-spark-joy-anymore/ Fri, 05 Apr 2024 17:02:24 +0000 /?p=325269 Like many X users on Easter Monday, I woke up to the perpetual chaos that鈥檚 plagued the microblogging platform since Elon Musk took the reins. This time, a left me and millions of other users confused. The word? Stainless 鈥 a new coinage for 鈥渃elibacy鈥 common among Nigerian men who鈥檝e relocated and find it hard to get laid. I was intrigued by the sheer number of people abroad who revealed that they now juggle between celibacy and self-pleasure.

I spent the next few days looking for subjects to share their experiences with forced celibacy. It was during my journo quest that I found Feranmi*.

As Told To Adeyinka

I relocated to Finland in mid-2023. It was a bittersweet move because, on the one hand, I was excited to finally escape Nigeria, but on the other hand, I was leaving everything I鈥檇 known in all my 27 years. This was scary for me. I remember my mum saying, 鈥淲ill you kuku stay back?鈥 Everyone who knows me knows I struggle to make friends or form new relationships, so a recurring question in my head was, 鈥淗ow will I survive?鈥

To make matters worse, my girlfriend said we should call it quits because she couldn鈥檛 do long distance. I tried to get her to visit for one last memorable time together before I travelled, but she didn鈥檛 come.

When I arrived in Finland, it was just like I feared. I stayed with my cousin, and in the first few weeks, he was on leave. He resumed work the second week, and that was when the loneliness kicked in. At first, I felt I could handle it because I could go days all alone at home in Nigeria. I was so wrong. There鈥檚 something different about the loneliness here. It鈥檚 that feeling of knowing you won鈥檛 get random visitors, spot someone you know or just have the assurance of familiar strangers in your street.

The biggest women-only festival in Lagos is BACK.
for a day of fun, networking and partayyyyy

I soon started to get mad horny, which was strange because I wasn鈥檛 even thinking of sex. I mean, I鈥檇 broken up, was in a new country鈥 I鈥檇 accepted it would take a while to get laid. But I kept getting awkward erections. Since I couldn鈥檛 put the feelings off, the easiest thing to do was wank. And the thing is, I wasn鈥檛 much of a wanker in Nigeria. I had my girlfriend, and our聽聽was good.

Here? I鈥檝e beaten my meat to submission, and it doesn鈥檛 excite me anymore.

I haven鈥檛 even tried to put myself out there because where will I start? I don鈥檛 have a job yet, so I hardly meet anyone besides neighbours, shop attendants and passersby. Most of the folks around here speak Finnish and have a strong 鈥淢inding my business鈥 aura.

The other day, I sent a DM to a Finnish lady on IG who I followed聽before I left Nigeria. She responded in Finnish. I had to translate on Google to respond, which made our chat stressful. We still text, but we鈥檝e never made it past pleasantries and 鈥淢iten loydat suomen? (鈥淗ow do you find Finland?鈥)

My cousin also doesn鈥檛 help matters. He鈥檚 about ten years older, and we have a good relationship but not one where we freely talk about girls or relationships. He鈥檚 married and still trying to bring his wife and child over from Nigeria, so I can鈥檛 be talking about my need for sex with him.

I鈥檝e accepted my fate. But I recently joined this Nigerian Twitter community for people in Finland, and I鈥檓 hopeful. Although I鈥檝e heard it鈥檚 not easy to date a Naija babe here if you鈥檙e still hustling, I know they must also have intimate needs. It just takes finding the right person and letting them know you鈥檙e in it for real.

These days, I don鈥檛 bother to wank because it鈥檚 gotten boring. But I never thought about it as going 鈥淪tainless鈥 until I saw the Twitter convo. I guess that鈥檚 what it is. The last time I wanked was in January.
